So You’re Ready for TikTok?

TikTok has taken the world by storm. It’s so easy to get caught up in the endless short videos that give advice, dance moves, health tips, or make us laugh. Because of TikTok’s popularity, you may be wondering if it can help promote your brand, product, or services and connect you with more potential customers. TikTok could be a great marketing tool; the company claims to have more than 150 million Americans on its platform, which is growing every second. Perhaps your marketing manager or team has come to you with the idea of branching off into this new limitless world of engaging social media content, and now you’re wondering how to move forward.

First things first, if you haven’t already, you’ll need to create a business account on the website TikTok.com or download the app from the app store. Although the website allows you to do several things, including uploading content, you will find that you get more capabilities when using the app directly. This includes voice-over applications, video editing assets, and filters.

Once you’ve created an account, you should get familiar with the app by exploring content and looking for inspiration for your brand. Here’s a quick caution: Don’t get lost because you could be there for hours.

TikTok has been at the center of conversation. Across the U.S., there is a great debate on banning the popular social media site. In June of 2023, the federal government and 34 States banned employees from downloading and using the app on any device used for work, including personal devices. Montana became the first state to create legislation that would ban TikTok on all personal devices; however, that ban won’t take effect until January 2024 because of court challenges. Public colleges, universities, and school systems are also following suit. Now, some politicians on Capitol Hill are looking to remove the popular platform from the phones of regular U.S. citizens over concerns the Chinese government is spying on us or gaining access to personal data. Even with talks of a possible governmental ban, the site is still growing in content creators and users.

Top influencers worldwide are debating the legality of this new push for a ban and are still creating content. Many of them don’t think it will stick, at least not now and not for the general public. One popular content producer with over 2.5 million followers says you should create the content anyway! TikTok is still the easiest place to create videos. The influencer also noted that market research shows that TikTok is also the best place to differentiate yourself from other businesses, and you can gain people’s trust more quickly than any other platform.  The app, designed for engagement, has innovative machine-learning algorithms capable of identifying people’s interests based on viewing a handful of videos. TikTok analytics allows you to learn a lot about your followers and gives you options to download that data to help you create a marketing strategy.

The benefits of marketing your brand or services on TikTok certainly outweigh the cons.

Market research shows it takes a shorter amount of time for TikTok users to feel like they know you more than any other platform, and it’s the easiest platform to go viral on. Some things to remember: make sure you save your TikTok content. If there is an actual ban on this social media platform, you can repurpose that content for other social media sites such as YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook. Finally, connecting with clients and potential clients is your ultimate goal, so make sure to gather emails and or phone numbers.

Here are some things you can use TikTok for to better connect with your followers and gather more data:

  • Know the problem that you are solving and offer a giveaway to your audience in exchange for an email address.

  • Use creative and engaging videos to promote your products or services, and make sure to place the link in your bio.

  • Capture and confirm the emails and deliver on giveaways or free information.

  • Cross-promote your brand, products and services on other social media channels.

  • Stay on brand! Don’t compromise your reputation to go viral.

  • Keep it simple at first; try not to tackle the most advanced trends.

  • Make it fun!
